Globalization, Wages, and Working Conditions in Developing Countries: New Evidence from 5 Country Studies

— filed under:

23 May 2008

  • Are workers better off after their countries open up to foreign investment and trade?
  • What do we know about wages and working conditions post-liberalization?
  • What is the role of public policy and institutions?

Raymond Robertson of Macalester College will present a conceptual framework for analyzing globalization and working conditions as well as five country studies applying this framework (Cambodia, Indonesia, El Salvador, Honduras, and Madagascar). The approach, which relies on household datasets collected before and after a period of increased liberalization in the countries, represents an innovative tool for understanding and analyzing the effects of changes in trade policy and FDI exposure on workers.
