Design elements
When Better Work designs a country programme it must gather support
from the relevant employers’ and workers’ organizations, the national
government and international buyers. IFC and ILO require this support
in order to ensure the success and sustainability of the project.
Country projects typically combine:
- enterprise
assessments (a) of compliance with core international labour standards
and national labour law and (b) quality and productivity performance;
- enterprise advisory and training services to support practical improvements through workplace cooperation; and
- stakeholder engagement and sustainability.
Each
country programme will be designed to build sustainable independent
organizations that will continue to provide services beyond the initial
funding period. This means that within five years the projects are
expected to become self-financing.
Better Work programmes are industry-based schemes providing services at the enterprise level. They are designed to work closely with existing IFC and ILO initiatives, particularly those focusing on capacity building in the private sector or in public sector labour administration, as well as projects for employers’ and workers’ organizations.
