Indonesia
Indonesia is one of the world’s leading exporters of textiles and apparel products. The apparel industry employs more than 500,000 workers, of which 78% are women, in approximately 2,000 enterprises supplying both export and domestic markets, and accounts for 11% of the employment in the manufacturing sector. The industry is growing at over 8% per year, as garment factories move from China to Indonesia and other countries in the region.
Indonesia, the first Asian country to ratify the eight ILO Core Conventions, stands in a strong position during the current financial crisis, and has strengthened its economic fundamentals through sound macroeconomic policies.
Better Work Indonesia began operations in 2011 and is working with key stakeholders to establish a sustainable service. The Indonesian Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration together with the Indonesian Employers Association (APINDO) and the four main union federations involved in the garment industry provide overall direction to Better Work Indonesia. Better Work Indonesia builds not only on the Better Work programme in other countries, but on other ILO and IFC initiatives in Indonesia, as well. Brands sourcing from Indonesia, together with their suppliers, are working closely with the Better Work team in Indonesia to develop our programme.
The initial focus of Better Work Indonesia is to provide assessments and advisory services to garment factories in the greater Jakarta region. Over the next five years, it is expected that over 300,000 garment workers will benefit from Better Work through improved working conditions.
